Do you feel more like a zombie after a day at work than a superhero? Feeling exhausted, unmotivated and in physical pain, each day from your job? That can lead to some pretty serious consequences for both your mental and physical health.
Let’s take a closer look at the top 3 ways your job could be hurting your health and what you can do it fix it.
1)The issue: Too much Stress
Avoiding stress at the workplace and throughout the day can be difficult. Nearly one-third of us are stressed during the workday and about 40% of us blame long hours for that stress, says the Atlantic. Although a 40-hour workweek is supposed to be the standard many of us put in a long hour at our jobs each day leading to a host of health issues.
Chronic stress leads to both physical and mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, weight gain, sleeping problems and heart disease. No one wants to be stress, but when we factor in long commutes, longer hours and the competitive nature of today’s job market it’s easy to see why so many of us are feeling the pressure.
What to do: Find healthy activities and programs outside of work.
To counteract all the stress your body and mind are under at work, try finding healthy activities and programs you can take part in outside of work. It might as simple as finding a new local running club or scheduling a weekly workout or yoga session with your friends. If exercise doesn’t help you manage stress try something a little more internal like meditation or quietly reading.

2)Not enough movement
Long commutes and hours spent sitting at our desks can lead to not only neck and back problems, but to obesity, higher blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart disease. The majority of us spend our days in unnatural positions either slouched over a computer or with our heads down dialled into our smartphones.
The long-term consequence of working and operating in these unnatural positions is immense. Chronic back and neck pain is common amongst many office workers as are headaches from strained eyes. Don’t let your overall health become affected by these common workplace issues. It’s important to take proactive steps towards your health while at work too!
What to do: Stay in motion and check out OLS Mobile Retreats
Stand up and stretch often if you’re working at a desk or a seated position. Stretch your wrists and hands if you’re typing frequently and try using blue-blocking glasses is possible. If you have the time and the facility is available to you, getting your workout in at lunch is a great way to keep your body in motion throughout the day even if your job is static.

3)Lack of mental stimulation
Let’s face it not every job is going to be your favourite. We’ve all had those jobs we hate or just had to do because of the circumstances at the time. However, it’s ultimately best to avoid long term jobs that don’t stimulate us mentally.
We all have varying levels of creativity within us, some have more than others. If you’re a very creative person but stuck in an unstimulating job consider the negative consequences this could be having on your life.
Anxiety, depression and sleeping problems are all health conditions attributed to poor working conditions or workspaces that aren’t mentally healthy for us. Remember, work issues can manifest into your personal life as well, as people who are stressed at work often bring that stress back into their relationships at the end of the day.
